Freedom of religion is a blessing I have always taken for granted. This year, for the first time, I am spending Independence Day outside the United States. Heather and I are visiting family in London, Ontario.
Rather than grilling burgers and watching fireworks, our Canadian friends are going about their business as usual (just as we did on their patriotic holiday, July 1). The contrast has me thinking ever more than usual about the freedoms we enjoy—especially this one:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
I am grateful to live in a time and place where I am free to worship God, write about my faith, disagree with the dogma of others, and follow Jesus according to the dictates of my own conscience and not someone else’s.
Happy Independence Day.
